Where are the Safest Places to Live?

!: Where are the Safest Places to Live?

A recent front page article in The New York Times noted that "the devastation from Gulf Coast hurricanes is serving as a strong reminder that possible disasters could lay waste to cities and states across the country." Fortunately, environmental hazards are not uniformly distributed across America; many attractive locales are relatively safe.

Warren R. Bland, professor of geography at California State University, Northridge and author of Retire in Style: 60 Outstanding Places Across the USA and Canada, has prepared a list of ten U.S. places that are unusually safe in terms of potential exposure to five major environmental hazards. He considered degree of potential exposure to flooding due to hurricanes and tsunamis, as well as threats to life and property from earthquakes, tornadoes, radon gas, and air pollution. All ten places have a zero chance
of catastrophic flooding from hurricanes and tsunamis, and in all ten the dangers from earthquakes, tornadoes and air pollution are in the zero to low threat range. Only radon gas, an often overlooked threat to health, is so widespread across America that it poses a significant risk, if unabated, in five of the ten environmentally safest cities and towns.

Dr. Bland's top ten environmentally safe places are: Austin, Texas; Fredericksburg-Kerrville, Texas; Pinehurst-Southern Pines, North Carolina; Prescott, Arizona; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Eugene, Oregon; Ithaca, New York; Portland, Oregon; San Antonio, Texas; and Tucson, Arizona.

Radon Gas Properties

!: Radon Gas Properties

Radon is a radio active gas that have agonizing health hazards when present in high levels in the atmosphere. However, it naturally occurs in relatively small quantities in the atmosphere that are harmless. This gas is odorless, colorless and thus very hard to detect with our natural senses. This make it easier for it to accumulate indoors in places such as basements or low living areas.

At room temperature it's generally heavy, turns into a brilliant phosphorescent yellow below freezing point and when in liquid it changes to red-orange. Generally, radon concentration is higher in ground waters and in the soil. It finds its way into our houses through cracks or openings on the floor more so in the basements and keeps on accumulating. Basically, you may never notice its presence until it becomes very toxic causing sever health problems such as cancer or even death.

The dangers of radon were quite unknown to many before the mid 80's and it's until then that it was discovered to be a threat in our homes. High radiation levels in a nuclear plant of Limerick Pennsylvania were actually triggered by the presence of this gas in the area. This concentration was compared to the impact of smoking more than 130 cigarettes a day.

Did you know that a simple thing as taking a bath in a hot spring can actually expose you to this gas? Well, as crazy as it may sound, it's the simple truth. Countries like Germany, Japan or the U.S are the leading places with hot-springs rich in radium that can expose you to this gas. Basically, keeping check of this gas often would actually be the best way in combating it.

How it Works - The canister is a 6 cm. high by 2.5 cm. diameter high-density polyethylene liquid scintillation vial. The 22-ml capacity vial is designed to hold a small canister near the opening above the scintillating fluid. The canister, made of high-density polyethylene, contains a patented pharmaceutical-grade charcoal-silica adsorption patented device configuration produces minimum attenuation of the scintillation signal. Perforated end caps allow air to circulate through the mixture and retain any charcoal dust. A polyethylene cap, capable of sealing tightly, prevents the loss of Radon gas from the vial. Alpha particles emitted by the breakdown products of Radon create scintillations, or flashes of light, in the cocktail. A photo-multiplier tube detects these scintillation's, the signal is electronically enhanced and the effect of the alpha particles are counted.

Background counts are subtracted and the net counts are entered into a formula with other relevant data yielding quantitative results stated in picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L). After exposure, the vial is returned to the laboratory for analysis. Scintillation cocktail is added and the Radon allowed an elution period of several hours. The vial is then placed in a shielded chamber for counting.

ALL SALES ARE FINAL. No returns will be accepted for these lab test kits. Should for any reason the lab test is not conducted within 8 days of you mailing the pre-addressed postage paid envelope to our lab, you will receive a full refund.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has verified this product for accurate radon measurement. NELAP, NEHA & NRPP listed.
